Huawei Honor 8 test : price, display, specs and features

Honor 8 just be announced in China with a vigorous data sheet and a launch price very attractive. While the phone should be launched in India in few weeks, it’s interesting to know now what are its main competitors. In other words, does Honor 8 the new mid-range market smartphone baseline ?

Which smartphones could be compete with Honor 8 ? If we take the price as baseline, comparaison is hard because we don’t know its exact price in India. In China, it will be sold between Rs. 22,190 and Rs. 27,740 according to RAM (3 or 4 GB) and storage capacity (32 to 64 GB).

Thus, we made the choice to compare Honor 8 to the best value for money on the market OnePlus 3, sold at Rs. 29,550. We also compared it to Nexus 5X (sold currently about Rs. 22,190) and to Galaxy S6 sold around Rs. 29,590.

For this first part of comparative, we’ll see design and screen.

Honor 8 Design

It’s almost the first time for Honor, its last smartphone let down the whole metal to model new Samsung high-end smartphones. Honor 8 should dispose of metal slices, but with a glass black. Two points have to be noticed : Honor 8 has a fingerprint digital sensor at its back and board a USB-C port. About its face, it’s a simple Huawei P9 copy, with it shares a lot of common features by the way. Lastly, let us remind its dimensions : 145,5 x 71 x 7,45 mm for 0,34 pounds.

In response, the only smartphone displaying as much arguments is OnePlus 3. Between its USB-C port, its full metal body and its fingerprint digital sensor, it has a careful design.

Less so for Nexus 5X with its plastic cover and disappointing touch, and Galaxy S6 which doesn’t have micro-SD card port.

Honor 8 Screen
Huawei - Honor parent company - has always been honest about the screen subject : there is no discussion of 2K screens (or QHD), displays judged both useless and too greedy.

It comes as no surprise that screen is « only » full HD 5,2-inch on the Huawei Honor 8. The same configuration as Huawei P9. Hopefully, Huawei will keep the possibility to fix colors screen.

For competitors, it’s more or less the same thing. Both OnePlus 3 and Nexus 5X have a 1080p screen. For the first one, it’s an Amoled screen with saturated colors recently fixed. For the second one, display is one of the weakness with bad brightness and colour rendering.

Finally, concerning Galaxy S6, it’s surely the best screen on this comparative. It boards a Super Amoled QHD screen with excellent colors. It’s maybe not as controlled as Galaxy S7, but was one of the best displays last year. It has also a strong point which Honor 8 doesn’t have : it’s QHD screen, perfect to test virtual reality.

Stay tuned for further evaluation with a comparative on performances, camera and battery capacity.
